Our take

What Hot Spring actually is

Hot Spring is the Watkins flagship brand, made in Vista, California. They’ve been the resale-value king of the industry for decades.

The Highlife Grandee is the flagship of the flagship. Largest tub in the Highlife collection. Seven seats, $14,000 to $19,000 typical install. Premium-tier across every factor.

Owners keep these tubs 15 to 20 years. The 7-year shell warranty is real. The No-Fault heater carries a lifetime warranty on the element. Five-year-old Grandees still command 50 to 60 percent of new price on the used market. Nothing else in the industry comes close on resale.

The Moto-Massage DX track jet is the category-defining feature for back-pain therapy. Comfort is excellent. Ergonomics are excellent. Build quality is best in class.

So why doesn’t this score 76?

The Caldera math

Caldera is Hot Spring’s sister brand. Same Watkins plant. Same engineers. Same supply chain. Different badge and 10 to 15 percent cheaper sticker.

If you don’t plan to resell, Caldera Utopia delivers the same engineering for less money. The brand premium on Hot Spring is real, and it’s earned through resale value and dealer network. For buyers who’ll keep the tub until it dies, that premium is paying for resale you’ll never collect.

Setup is a real expense people forget. 240v hardwired, 50-amp dedicated circuit, $800 to $2,500 in electrician work. Crane install for second-story patios runs another $500 to $1,500. CoolZone, ACE saltwater, FreshWater III ozone are all upsells. By the time you’re filled and running, the all-in cost is 25 to 40 percent above the sticker.

Should you buy this tub

Buy it if: You’ll keep the tub 15-plus years and value resale. Or back pain is your driver and Moto-Massage DX has fixed it for you in a wet test. Or your local Hot Spring dealer has a strong service operation.

Don’t buy it if: You’ll keep the tub 5 to 8 years. Caldera Utopia at the same dealer is the smarter buy. Or you’ve got the budget for a Bullfrog M-Series M9, which has better architecture for similar reliability.

On the fence? Wet-test a Grandee against a Caldera Utopia 7-seater at the same dealer same hour. Same swim trunks, same temperature, same jet sequence. The only real difference you’ll feel is seat sculpting and Moto-Massage placement. Decide if that’s worth $1,500 to $2,500.

Score is 68. The hardware is best in class. Price-to-features is what holds it back.

Best for / skip if

Best for: Long-term owners (15+ years) who value reliability and resale value over upfront price.

Skip if: You’re budget-constrained — Caldera (sister brand from the same plant) delivers nearly identical engineering at 10-15% lower pricing.

Pricing

This brand is sold through dealer networks rather than online retail. Pricing varies by region and dealer; expect 80-90% of MSRP after negotiation. Contact your local dealer for a current quote.

FAQ

Does the Hot Spring Spas Highlife Grandee need a dedicated 240v circuit?

Yes. The Highlife Grandee is a 240v hardwired hot tub that requires a dedicated 50-amp GFCI breaker and a hardwire connection by a licensed electrician. Plan for $400–$2,000 in install costs depending on panel distance and local code.

Does the Hot Spring Spas Highlife Grandee include a cover?

Cover inclusion varies by retailer and bundle. Verify on the listing before you purchase — a third-party replacement runs $250–$500 if you have to buy one separately.

When does the Hot Spring Spas Highlife Grandee warranty start?

Warranty start dates vary by manufacturer policy on the Highlife Grandee. Most start on the delivery date, not install or fill. Save the original receipt and delivery confirmation — warranty disputes in this category often come down to documenting purchase date.
